(Now with audio, below)
I was up late last night
Hearing the sound of the waves
A hundred miles away
Couldn't sink down 'cause they kept me up
Tossed all night and kept me up
They won't let me down
But the tides
Draw back their daughters
They don't wait for me
The ocean air is rolling
Full of wet salt and wood smoke
From far away its floating
But it won't tell us where it's going
Where is it going?
It's coming for me
But the tides
Draw back their daughters
Down in their waters
They don't wait for me
How is the light 'neath the ocean?
Safe from this pitch and roll
Under me I hear them singing
'Well, wouldn't you like to know?'
Don't you want to know
All the deep sees?
But the tides
Draw back their daughters
Round them with waters
They don't wait for me
In the morning, when we rose
The moon was out rowing
I wonder if she'll make the shore
I said to you, 'I should be going'
I should be going
They won't wait for me
But the tides
Draw back their daughters
Round them with waters
Oh, the tides
They draw back their daughters
Down in those waters
They don't wait for me
They don't wait for me
No land, no sea
Only waves and me
With the moon we'll be
And don't wait for me

You've captured some very beautiful images here; I particularly enjoyed "the moon was out rowing." Your refrain about the waters drawing back their daughters very evocative of the ebb and flow of the ocean; the whole poem radiates that mood of time and nature being uncontrollable and holding out promises beyond knowing.
ReplyDelete(Wrote that before listening to the audio, which gives it an additional dimension--adds the narrator into the poem a bit more somehow, and the last lines are clearer with the alteration in text.Very nice.)
Welcome. A hedge witch is always welcome here.
ReplyDeleteWhen I recorded this one, hearing my first attempts really helped straighten out the words in a way that looking at it couldn't.
Another you might like is Briar Queen. It came to me as a song, too. If I'm really, really brave, I should record it as well.
