I just read over at Hedgewitch's site that you were in Berlin and can relive the victory with Egypt today what an experience
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I wasn't there for the fall in '89. I went to Bremerhaven two years later, very much still an early and uncertain transition time for both halves of Germany. The failed Moscow 'putsch' that led to the end of the USSR happened on my birthday. It was strange for me to see how viscerally nervous the threat of a military reversal of Perestroika made the Germans.
ReplyDeleteI'd lived in a pretty serious bubble up to that point. And watching the West Germans try to unify themselves with the East Germans - after a split of barely 30 years - taught me that victories like the fall of the wall are a party followed by a long hangover.
